Advice of Notifiable Disease

We wish to advise families that we have had a confirmed case of Parainfluenza amongst our students.

Parainfluenza is a viral, highly contagious upper and lower respiratory illness in infants, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

After the person is infected it can take about 2 to 7 days before you develop any symptoms.

The virus spreads through airborne droplets (from coughing and/or sneezing), or contact with contaminated hands and tissues, etc.

Symptoms are and include:

  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Wheezing
  • Cough
  • Ear pain
  • Irritability
  • Decreased appetite

A person experiencing these symptoms should be excluded from child care, preschool, school or work for at least 3-5 days after the onset of symptoms or until they feel well and contact their family doctor of treatment advice.

Patients and family members should take basic hygiene precautions to prevent the spread of the virus – wash hands as soon as possible after coughing or sneezing or after contact with nose or mouth, and wipe down all frequently touched surfaces regularly with a cleaning cloth dampened with detergent.

Further information should be sought from your usual doctor if required.

Kind regards,

Regards,
Ian Kent
Principal
