Principal’s Report
As we close for another year at Eastern Fleurieu R-12 School we need to reflect on what is so good about this school. For me it is the educational opportunities, and outcomes that are evident in every Newsletter, Facebook, and Instagram pages.
Our school has many outstanding and experienced teachers; excellent support staff; students with a range of talents and abilities and a committed and supportive Governing Council and wider community. As a school of choice in the Fleurieu area we strive to go forward as a progressive R-12 school. This was endorsed when Professor Martin Westwell, CE Department for Education visited our school and said “…I want every school in SA to be like this school in 2-3 years’ time…” and at the time of writing this article, I was contacted by Ann Prime our Education Director, who said she had been requested by Martin to contact us to do a presentation of our school’s journey at the State Educational Leaders Day in 2024.
This is an awesome recognition of the work the staff do at EFS. Given we are experiencing a national critical shortage of teachers there are many reasons why we should be grateful for the work they do. I am and know that the overwhelming majority of you do, so next time you hear someone being negative about our school and staff, show them the newsletter or the snippets on Facebook and Instagram. ‘The proof is in the pudding’!
We can be confident our students are participating in the highest quality teaching and learning environment that is filled with students who love life, love learning and love seeking out opportunities to further challenge themselves.

Recipients of the 2023 Principal’s Awards, April and Brady. Congratulations.
Year 12 Graduation Highlight Reel
Student wellbeing and achievement will continue to be the main focus for the school. It is our aim to provide varied academic, social, sporting, community service and leadership opportunities that help students broaden their horizons, develop their resilience, and encourage their ability to think deeply and independently.
I hope you have a sensational Christmas and New Year break with family and friends. Stay safe and I look forward to working with you all once again in 2024.
Regards,
Ian Kent

YEAR 6 TRANSITION DAY
CHOCOLATE COCONUT BALLS
A delicious (and messy) food taster session with the Year 6 EFS students making chocolate coconut balls for their first transition day! The smiles say it all!

CONNECT PROGRAM
NAIDOC WEEK COLLABORATIVE POSTER
For NAIDOC week, the Connect students worked with Miss Mead’s reception students during their PACA time to create this lovely collaborative art piece.
They spent the afternoon colouring in and talking about what NAIDOC week is all about and what Indigenous symbols to include within the art.
It was impressive to hear the receptions tell the 'big kids' what some of the symbols meant. The art was displayed at the 7-12 Campus for NAIDOC Week.

Dressage Success
Ashton and Chalani Card Tricks announced as the overall individual winners of the Sub-junior Preliminary Dressage!
1st Prelim 1.1 on an impressive 83.8% (83.8 is an amazing high score btw)
2nd Prelim 1.2 - 71.071% (0.179 behind 1st)
1st Prelim 1.3 - 70.208%

What a super consistent combination Ashton and Trixie were, putting together 3 of their best tests.
The dressage was held as a virtual competition, with the tests filmed and judged following the State Hubs on October 2-5. Well done Ashton.
CONNECT PROGRAM
BUDDIES AND MENTORS
As part of the Connect Program in Semester 1, students went to the R-6 Primary School to work with Ms Mead’s and Ms Campagnaro’s Reception classes for their Play Based Learning Activities. Some Connect students made activities for the Receptions to participate in, including making coloured pasta necklaces, coloured playdough, and cardboard ramps. We hope to continue with Buddies and Mentors through the Connect Program in 2024.

ASHBOURNE CAMPUS
14 Ashbourne Road, Ashbourne SA 5157 Ph: 8536 2455
Head of Campus Report

As we wrap up 2023 I wanted to share with you all, all the amazing things that have occurred at Ashbourne this year. The most important thing is the incredible growth each of our students have had this year. They are all on their own journey with their learning, wellbeing and social connection, and each of them have made new milestones and accomplishments this year, we could not be prouder of them all!
It has been such a busy year, jammed packed with fun events and new learning, including, our weekly incredible bush school day, with a different termly focus. This is truly a special day for our students. The learning and student agency that takes place on this day is amazing and something we are proud of and look forward to continuing in 2024.
The students have participated in swimming, sports day, National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week, acknowledging our First Nations people, and showing respect for the Peramangk original land owners of which we learn and play on at Ashbourne. We went on a fun camp to Arbury Park with Milang, engaged in Music is Fun with all R-6 students at the Strathalbyn campus. Our excursions took us to the Whale centre, the National Museum and Belair National Park. We had a fabulous time at all our small campus events, the Student Creation Market, Public Speaking Competition and the Milang Regatta. We loved seeing all the creative ideas during the Book Week dress up parade and finally our Art gallery, Talent Show and Year 6 graduation night was a huge success.
Thank you to all our families for making this year so successful, the support you show your children, the staff and all the students at this campus, truly represents what a special community we have here.
I want to acknowledge and thank the incredible, dedicated staff, Kiera, Robyn, Mathilda, Leanne, Bibi, Jack, Tony, Luke, Darcy, Bryn, Tammy, Kerry and the Specialist teachers, Tom, Kaye, Caitlin and Sarah. What an amazing team!
From myself and the staff, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe holiday break.
Regards,
Rebekah Fahey
Head of Campus
Year 6 Graduation
Congratulations to Hayden, Damian, Charles and Evan on graduating from Ashbourne campus. Each of you have brought something special to this campus, you are already for your next school adventure at the 7-12 campus in 2024, and we wish you all the best.

Talent Show
What an incredible night, each student showcased their individual acts, demonstrating their true character through their courage, resilience and creativity. It was wonderful to see all our families enjoy the night, sharing this new memory with their child/children. The performances included, singing, dancing, magic tricks, jokes, piano and guitar playing and a puppet show. The students wrapped up the show with class dances they had learnt in Performing Arts with Mrs Koutsikas. They were awesome! The raffle went to Jett and Jed’s family. All the art work and calendars were purchased, acknowledging and supporting the student’s creative and unique art work. From the raffle, art work and calendars we raised $339 that will go towards school events in 2024.

Milang Regatta
What a sensational day. Our students had been working hard all term, designing and creating their rafts for this special, fun day. All their hard work paid off as they launched their rafts into the lake and gave the race their best effort. Each team had decided on who would race the single and double rafts on the day, and each raft racer gave 100% in each race. The other student’s cheers were so loud, showing their support for each other. Lola came second in the Junior Primary single raft race, Grace came second in the Middle/Upper Primary single raft race, Brody and Ashton won the Junior Primary double raft heat and the final race. Caleb and Hayden’s raft unfortunately did not survive the race but they did not give up and dragged their raft to the finish. The students are already planning their rafts for 2024. We finished the day with a quick dip in the Lake. Thank you to Susannah and all the Milang staff for organising such a fun, unique event. We will be back next year.

LANGHORNE CREEK CAMPUS
Bridge Road, Langhorne Creek SA 5255 Ph: 8536 2455
Head of Campus Report

This year at Langhorne Creek Campus has presented us with a few challenges outside of our work as Educators, with Building Refurbishment works going on. I am extremely proud and grateful of our staff team here for their commitment to ensuring teaching and learning programs continued, students and staff well-being was at the heart of our work. We have cleared out many unusable resources- collected over years, old and broken equipment, whilst maintaining respect to treasured historic items. We created workable spaces to meet the need of our work. Classes have been settled with learning in full swing, our students and staff are enjoying our newly refurbished teaching and learning spaces. We are in the final weeks of Stage 2 of the Building Refurbishment. Seeing the decking along the 4 classrooms taking shape, we know it won’t be long before we will be moving in. Then comes the celebration of the project. A huge shout out to Ian and Becky for all they do behind the scenes to ensure our campus upgrade has come to fruition. Thankyou!
What a great term we have had with our learning and the life links made to ensure our students enjoy participation in learning linked to our excursions and events.
- Mozzie Creek – Sustainability, Collaboration and Creativity - Bee Hotel, bird bath and cultural weaving was enjoyed by all.
- New Reception transition – It has been great having Kindergarten students joining us, experiencing school for the first time. We are pleased to have 8 new receptions joining us 2024.
- Small Campus Public Speaking Competition – Our own Darcey Ferguson was the overall winner on the day sharing her musical interests with the audience and judges. Although extremely hot we were kept cool in the Town Hall and classrooms as Junior Primary classes joined in the activities and learnings on the day. We shared a sausage sizzle and ice blocks for all before Ashbourne and Milang returned to their campuses.
- Dental Hygienist visit – Mel Helyar shared interesting facts and the importance of good dental hygiene. It was interesting to see the sugar contents in drinks many of us drink daily. Students received a dental pack from Mel’s clinic along with increased knowledge of dental hygiene.
- Beach Day – although students were unable to enter the water, we managed to have an enjoyable day building sandcastles, digging for water, mandalas on the beach. Hot chips for lunch was followed by a historic walk and talk up to the lookout and landmarks at Port Elliot
- Year 6 Extra Transition – has been a great success for our students who attended. Carol from 7-12 Campus made our students feel at ease as she engaged them in experiences to support them settling into secondary school. A huge Thankyou to Carol and 7-12 Campus staff involved, we appreciated the program created for our students.
- SAPSASA cricket and tennis events enabled our student's participation with success making it through to finals. Our students returned very proud of their efforts.
- Life Matters Christmas presentation - was a hit with students and staff. Thankyou Narelle for ensuring our students were able to enjoy the show.
- Milk Carton Regatta at Milang, Lake Alexandrina – this year we entered more water crafts than previously. Students enjoyed the day competing and supporting each other for a successful day.
- Step Up Day – it is great to have our new Reception students join us for a day on campus. All students experienced their classes for 2024.
- Yet to come is our End of Year Concert Spectacular – “The Block” ~ Year 6 Graduation ~ Casual for Cambodia last day of year.
Thankyou to all our families for choosing Langhorne Creek Campus for your children’s education. Wishing all our Year 6 students a successful transition to their secondary education and beyond. Have a wonderful break over Term 4 holidays and Christmas with your families.
Another great year at Langhorne Creek Campus. See you all next year.

Les Cameron

Koalas and Quokkas News
Dr Carl visit
Langhorne Creek was lucky enough to have a zoom visit from Dr Carl. He answered all our science questions about the world around us, such as:
What are dreams?
Why is our pee yellow?
Why do we have bones?
All the children loved this and enjoyed learning more about the world around them.
It was interesting. - Frankie
I liked Dr Karl because he told us stuff about science that we didn’t know. - Eli

Maths in Junior Primary
In maths we have been making piggy banks for our money unit. We used balloons and egg cartons to make the structure. We then used maths to make a 1:1 ratio recipe for paper mache. We had to rip up strips of paper to cover the pig shape. We then painted them and gave them names. This was super fun and all the students are excited to go home and start saving money.

Life Matters
Langhorne Creek had the life matters join us to talk about Saving Christmas. We played lots of fun games, like nailed it or failed it as well as Dear Santa. We also listened to them talk about the Christmas story.

Oceans
As a whole campus we have been learning about Oceans as our deep learning unit of work. We had a TEAMS meeting with a lady from Sea Shepherd which was very interesting. We have made an A-Z book of Oceans which we are very proud of. We also did some art work. - Kate

Milk Bottle Regatta
On Thursday we went to Milk Bottle Regatta at Milang and it was so much fun. We have spent the last few weeks making our boats with milk bottles, tape and a few other things. I went with Darcey and we did pretty well. There were lots of people there and we had a yummy sausage sizzle for lunch. We would like to thank Milang for organising the day. - Lexi

Step Up Day at Langhorne Creek
We welcomed our new Receptions for 2024 to Langhorne Creek Campus and this year’s Year 2 students stepped up to the Year 3-6 Class for the day. It was a great day, enjoyed by all. We are very much looking forward to our new families joining our wonderful campus for their children’s schooling.

Premiers Reading Challenge
Congratulations to our students who took part in the Premiers Reading Challenge.

Assembly
Congratulations to our Weeks 6 and 8 Assembly Award winners.

A brief note from Nazz - PCW

I can’t believe how this year has just flown by! I really love my role as Pastoral Care Worker, and I feel privileged to be a part of the wonderful school community at Langhorne Creek. I really enjoy the opportunity of working alongside the students and staff, and it’s also been great to get to know some of the parents a little more too.
Being able to support staff and students on excursions, attending camp at El Shaddai, and the Student Creation Market have been real highlights – it has also been exciting to see the gradual transformation of the campus as well.
In the almost two years I’ve been Pastoral Care Worker at the school, I’ve witnessed just how much the students have grown, not only in stature, but in character, their care for one another and their world – we have a lot to be thankful for.
I’m really looking forward to the end of year concert and fete – I know the students have been working hard towards this. I’m also very proud of all our Year 6’s and their achievements this year and I also look forward to attending their graduation ceremony. It’ll be sad to see them leave us, but I know they’ll be amazing as they head off into a new chapter in their lives.
As I reflect on this year there have been challenges, but there has also been great reward as I’ve seen the children grow and learn more and more about themselves and their world.
One last thought … Christmas is like life. It’s going to give you back what you put in, so I hope this year you are bringing all the joy, love, and gratitude to Christmas that it deserves!
I truly hope that this holiday season is filled with all that you hope for, and that however, wherever and with whomever you celebrate, I trust you will enjoy everything that this time of year brings.
Take care and stay safe over the holiday season, and I’ll see you in 2024!
Regards,
Narelle Vaughan
Pastoral Care Worker
Playgroup

We recently held a Teddy Bears' Picnic in the local playground. The children enjoyed bringing a teddy or soft toy on the day. At fruit time we sat down together with our furry friends and read bear stories and sang bear songs.
Water play, coloured water painting, sticky sand and musical instruments are some of the sensory experiences with which the children have engaged in recent weeks. Christmas activities will be available for the children at the last Playgroup for 2023. I look forward to seeing families in 2024.

MILANG CAMPUS

Head of Campus Report

It only feels like yesterday I was welcoming our new Reception students to Milang and now they are moving in to Year 1 and we will welcome 4 more for 2024. I love this time of year as we look back and see the growth of our students and all that they have achieved. Although it is sad to see our one Year 6 move on to high school, it is the next part of their journey and we are confident they he will be prepared. It’s always a delight when they pop back in and say hello and reminisce about all the things they did at primary school; concerts, excursions, regatta, swimming to name a few. I hope your child has enjoyed the year as much as we have enjoyed supporting them through the good times and the challenges. Enjoy the summer break and see you all next year.
Regards,
Susannah Cook

Playgroup

We recently held a Teddy Bears' Picnic. The children brought their teddies and soft toys for a fun-filled morning. At fruit time we gathered together and read teddy bear stories and sang teddy bear songs.
The children have been enjoying some warmer weather which has allowed them to engage with water play in the natural environment

Coffee Morning
Our parents managed to fit in one more coffee morning at the Mini Mart before the term ends. This will continue next year.
Happenings at Milang
Well, what a busy term we have had at Milang. Here are some photos of our excursions, tree planting, assemblies, and our learning.

To celebrate Seth finishing primary school the Year 5’s joined him at the Victor Aquatic Centre for the day.

Life Matters

Regatta
This year was the fifth annual Milk Bottle Regatta held at Milang Campus with competitors from Ashbourne, Milang, Langhorne Creek, Strathalbyn and Callington vying for the coveted Golden Milk Bottle trophy! It was a perfect day at Lake Alexandrina and the students were excited to get in the water and try their boats. They were some interesting designs and not all made it to the finish line in one piece, however there was a lot of laughter and huge student support from the shore. Many thanks to Milang Rescue boat for patrolling the waters, our lifeguards, Clayton Bay Caravan Park for the loan of their oars and life jackets and Fleurieu Milk for donating the flavoured milk prizes. Also, huge thanks to all the staff who made the day possible helping to build the boats and supervise on the day. See you all in 2024!

Step Up Day
Our new receptions enjoyed a full day of school on Step Up Day. Here they are showing off some of their activities.

Reminders from Donna
Student Creation Market
Last week we made our donation of $502 towards the Inter-church Council Christmas Hampers. This was received with much appreciation and will help out many local families. 221 Hampers were made and 659 people will be helped by this amazing cause. Well done to all the students from Ashbourne, Langhorne Creek and Milang who created and sold their items and made this donation to a local charity.
Hats
Hats are required now at all play times and PE lessons as is our sun safe policy. Donna has some new hats available for $10.
Attendance
Please always contact the school if your child is late, call or come in and sign a yellow slip. Also if your child is away or someone else is picking them up. If we don’t hear from you your child’s absence is marked as unexplained. A message from another student is not enough, we need to hear from a parent. If you are picking your child up early please come into the office and complete a green slip.
Please continue to follow the guidelines for keeping us all safe. If you need to come on site, please ensure you are sanitising when entering any buildings. Keep your visits brief and social distance at all times.
I hope you all have a lovely break and enjoy the holidays with your children. See you all in 2024.

Heads of Campus Report
Farewell from Mr Steele

The applause at the end of this speech goes to you all as the Eastern Fleurieu R-6 school community. After teaching here for twenty years, and the twenty- eight years before that having taught in ten other schools, I can say without doubt that this has been the best. I have found the staff here to be professional, collaborative and kind. I have found the students responsive, switched on in the art room and to have a younger, innocent attitude. And that is a result of your excellent parenting combined with the diligence of the staff. I was lucky to teach a subject that I love and that children generally love. My best memories will be working with students. If it is the receptions, it will be their laughter when I'd say "Good Morning ladies and jellybeans" or their angelic faces. If it is the older students, it will be their many successes in producing a standard of work that many times I wouldn't have thought was possible. The scarecrow auction, the haunted house on Gala Night, the murals and mushrooms, the tile mosaics, the Farm Gate Festival are all fond memories but the delight experienced by the students is the most satisfying of them all. Thank you for being the supportive community you are, which has made my job easier and has benefited your children. Thank you for your generosity and kindness.
I am thrilled that Meg Russo will take over the job on my retirement .She will bring a whole new approach and flavour to the subject, and I know she has the love and passion for it that I have.
Thank you once again.
Thankyou…
As we approach the end of another incredible year at our Strath R-6 campus, it's a joy to reflect on the many achievements and memorable moments that have filled our school days. From exciting classroom projects to engaging extracurricular activities, our primary school has been a hive of learning and creativity.
We take pride in the sense of community that has flourished within our school walls. The unwavering support from parents, the enthusiasm of our teachers, and the boundless energy of our students have created an environment where everyone feels valued and included. This year, we've witnessed countless instances of kindness, friendship, and collaboration, fostering a positive and nurturing atmosphere.
Academically, our students have demonstrated impressive growth and development. Their achievements in various subjects, as well as their participation in events such as performing arts events, art exhibitions, and sports competitions, showcase the diverse talents within our school community. Each child has contributed in their unique way, and we couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments.
Looking ahead, we are excited about the opportunities the new year will bring. As we bid farewell to 2023 let us carry the spirit of collaboration, curiosity, and kindness into the upcoming year.
I would like to thank all our parents, students and staff.
- Thank you to our Parent Club – Julianne, Trish and Leah, this team supported by you all have raised thousands of dollars that go directly into our campus and students. A special thankyou to Leah, as this was her final year of Parent Club.
- Our canteen team of Karen and Melissa and regular volunteers, Denise, Sam, Brooke, Megan, Nat, Julianne, Eden and our Year 5/6 students that are always happy to help
- Thank you to our Breakfast Club helpers
- Thank you to everyone who has volunteered at school events this year when able, helping out with reading, excursions, camps and general classroom activities
- Thank you to our wonderful students and staff
It is always hard to say goodbye to staff and students, that have been with us for many years and have been such an integral part of our school community and made a difference to so many of our students throughout the years.
- Paul Steele, Chris Pelle and Kaye Boxer will all retire at the beginning of next year. We will miss these experienced staff and the wealth of knowledge and support, care and compassion they have shown our students over the years
- Marisa Anderson has won a position at Forbes Primary School and will we miss her support in Millindilla and Room 3
- Our Year 6 graduation at the 7-12 campus was a fantastic night shared with parents and friends. Our Year 6 students have been a wonderful cohort, with many beginning with us from reception.
Thank you for being an integral part of our Eastern Fleurieu family. Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

Wellbeing
Expect Respect
Each year, our Art Teacher Paul Steele, designs an art theme for our Year 6 students that supports the very important messages behind healthy relationships and domestic violence awareness. This artwork then goes towards making a calendar of this theme. The Zonta Club of Mount Barker have supported this initiative for many years and not only sell our calendars but help us to fund the calendar and spread the message through the children’s art.
Zonta International is a world-wide service organisation that aims to empower women through service and advocacy. Zonta International has been “making a difference to the lives of women around the world since 1919”.
There are more than 33,000 Zontians in over 1200 clubs in 67 countries.
In the Strathalbyn community Zonta supports women, girls and children through scholarships and at EFS R-12 school with the “Expect Respect” program. The long term aim is reducing the incidence of domestic violence.
For the students involved, we present the information in an age appropriate presentation that focuses on respect, keeping safe and healthy relationships. This is aligned with the Australian Curriculum, the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum and is shaped by the trauma informed learning that our staff has undertaken with the Berry Street Education Model.
This year’s theme was based on famous pieces of artwork and students were asked to represent these pieces, focusing on the emotion in the paintings. The artwork was spectacular and all students were extremely proud of their efforts.
Earlier this year, the Service Clubs Association of SA Premier Awards, the Zonta Club of Mount Barker and the Eastern Fleurieu School won the 2023 Harry Tillyer Schools Community Service Award for their Expect Respect Program. Paul Steele and Maddie Garwood have continued the program over the last few years with a large number of Year 6 students each year. This has come with a number of challenges as many of the organisations that have actively supported the project, have been unable to continue their involvement after COVID.
For the past few years, the Zonta Club, have also awarded a Resilience Award to two students who have shown great strength and dedication to their time at school over the past 12 months. We thank them for these awards and the opportunity to highlight students who have gone above and beyond. These awards will be announced later this week.
Calendars are available for purchase through the school for $5 each. Please speak with Heidi or Maddie.

Team 28 Update
Students from Team 28 have had a Deep Learning focus about birds. They were lucky enough to have Darcy Whittaker, a local ecologist, come and talk to them about birds in our local area and things they could do to help them as their habitat is being destroyed to make way for houses and buildings. Using this information students from Team 28 took a survey of birds found in Tungaree Gardens. The students then researched the top 3 and designed bird boxes to suit these birds. The students then went across to the high school Tech Studies room where Mr Gomez, Mr Neville and a wonderful group of Year 8s helped them build bird boxes. The students were really engaged with this experience and thoroughly enjoyed the cross-aged activity.
Team 28 hope that everyone has a wonderful summer break and stay safe.

Room 13 Visits Gym It
On Wednesday, 22nd November our class walked up to Strathalbyn's brand new 24/7 Gym! In Health we have been looking at healthy eating and lifestyles.
We were so lucky to have Nadine and Jane take us for a tour of the gym, showing us the different parts of the body that each piece of equipment worked and we also were put through our paces with a mini workout circuit.
Not only were we fortunate enough to see the gym in operation, but we have now got a new appreciation for Jamie and her staff for bringing this venture to our town which will benefit our whole community.

Prosthetic Limbs in Room 6 – Visit from Noella
As a part of STEM learning, Room 6 has been looking at prosthetics limbs.
This has included research about how they work and having a go at designing and making their own.
Jo was able to organise her niece Noella to come and have a chat to Room 6 as Noella uses a prosthetic leg!
Noella was born with a vascular malformation in her right leg. Last year Noella made the decision to amputate her leg as her condition had caused her leg to seize, was very painful and she was unable to move it.
After a Q & A with the students where they learned about Noella’s life, her achievements and her goals, the students were able to show her their prototypes and receive feedback on their designs.
What are some challenges you face with a prosthetic leg?
Remembering to put it on charge. The mechanics in the leg help to maintain the pace I walk at.
Are you able to drive with it?
Yes I can, with my condition before I got the prosthetic I was able to get a driver’s license as we were able to convert a car so I could drive with my other leg. I can also use hand controls.
What is something you are proud of?
That I made to decision to amputate and I can now stand and walk without being in pain. I am also proud of the achievements I’ve made in competitive dressage.
Do people treat you differently with a prosthetic?
Not really, because I have lived with a disability all my life, getting my prosthetic didn’t really change anything. However, when I wear jeans and my prosthetic is covered this is when people treat me differently because my disability isn’t visible.
What inspired you after your amputation?
To be able to sit on the floor and cross my legs for the first time, and just getting my life back.

Thank you Noella for taking the time to come and chat to Room 6, it was an amazing experience for the students and a learning experience for all.
Room 25 – What a Year!
What a year room 25 has had! We finished our awesome year off with a trip to the cinemas to see Trolls 3 and a fun afternoon at a park and oval. It was a wonderful way for students to see the need for collaboration through animation.
Last week we dressed up as dogs and danced and sang “hound dog” and “who let the dogs out” for our Junior Primary end of year concert. One of the things I love about our community is how parents and carers reach out to offer their support or are always willing to say yes when I make crazy requests. This was evident when I asked Daisy’s grandma if she could make us 25 sets of woolly dog ears and her immediate response was YES, and when Jasper’s mum Chloe offered her service and products to paint our dog noses two days in a row! We were definitely the cutest dogs you ever did see! We were all able to put our nerves to the side and show off our ability to perform and entertain our audience. It was wonderful to see all the students participating and enjoying themselves, with most saying “That was so much fun, can we do it again?”
Thank you for a wonderful year Team 25, parents and carers.

Marissa Baker
Bird Boxes with Room 26
This term team 26 have been learning about living things. At the start of the term we had local ecologist, Darcy Whittaker come and speak to the class about homes and hollows. After lots of research the students decided to help create habitats for local animals by building nest boxes. With help from the Year 8 Design and Technology students we were able to build lots of nest boxes for the school and local community.

Head of Campus Report

As we bid farewell to 2023, I am delighted to reflect on the incredible achievements we’ve had as a school community; it has been a year filled with noteworthy events and memorable celebrations that reflect the outstanding efforts of the students and staff at the 7-12 Campus.
2023 WRAP UP
Our recent assemblies and graduations have been testament to the collective accomplishments of our students and a reflection of the diversity within our community. What success looks like is different for everyone; when students are celebrated for their individuality and what they bring, true inclusivity can be achieved. We are so lucky at EFS to have students and staff who are genuinely supportive of each other and live by our motto “Excellence through Unity”.
None of this is possible without the dedication from our incredible team of educators and support staff. Their commitment to nurturing the potential in every student has made a real difference to our students and families. I would also like to thank our EFS families for working in partnership with us in 2023.
Sadly, the end of the year usually means we have some farewells. I would like to acknowledge and thank the following staff members for their service and wish them well in their new ventures… _
Teachers Melanie Van de Veerdonk, Adrian Veljkovic and Laura Webb are moving to new schools next year and SSOs Tanya Naylor and Alice Wheeler are starting new ventures. We will be temporarily farewelling Gabrielle Kirk and Lisa Smith who are taking some leave.
2024 PREPARATION
We look forward to welcoming new students and families in 2024 and strengthening our partnerships with existing families. Your support with reinforcing expectations that create optimum conditions for learning for your child is vital. We will be sending more detailed information about some of our key improvement priorities in 2024 which include:
- READINESS FOR LEARNING: Being ready to learn involves students arriving at school with a fully charged device, the materials needed for learning and a willingness to actively participate in the learning process.
- UNIFORM COMPLIANCE: We will be strongly enforcing our EFS uniform expectations in 2024 to contribute towards school unity and creating a positive image for EFS in the community; we are asking for your support in this matter. From the start of Week 1, students who are not in uniform will be unable to commence learning programs until non-uniform items are removed and replaced with appropriate items. More details will be provided in the holiday mail out.
- PREDICTABLE ROUTINES: Predictable routines contribute to a sense of safety and order. In 2024, we will be working on reinforcing predictable daily routines to create an organized and effective learning environment. Home Group sessions will return to the start of the day to facilitate a positive, organised start to the daily program.
- MOBILE PHONES: The mobile phone ban in schools continues and students will be expected to keep phones and any accessories including earphones and airpods in their bags from 8.45am
Look out for further information about 2024 arrangements, which will be sent during the holidays via Schoolzine.
Meanwhile I wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday.

YEAR 7 AQUATICS
On Friday, 1st December, all Year 7 students attended the aquatics excursion at Horseshoe Bay as a part of the Year 7 Physical Education course. The experience provided the students with an opportunity to engage in a range of water-based activities, including paddle boarding, bodyboarding, and surf life-saving activities. These activities not only promoted water safety skills but also encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new challenges. We were fortunate to have ideal weather conditions during our time at Horseshoe Bay. The clear skies and gentle breeze added to the overall enjoyment of the day, allowing our students to fully immerse themselves in the activities and make the most of this unique opportunity. The Year 7 Aquatics excursion to Horseshoe Bay not only promoted physical activity and water safety but also fostered personal growth, resilience, and teamwork among our students.

YEAR 7/8 BEACH VOLLEYBALL

A keen group of 7/8 Volleyballers travelled to the Victor Beach Courts for a fun day of Beach Volleyball against other Fleurieu Schools and Kangaroo Island. We had 4 Girls’ Teams and 2 Boys’ Teams. The cool, overcast, and relatively calm day, was ideal and the standard of Volleyball from all teams often belied their year level. At the end of the day, two of our Girls’ Teams played off in the Grand Final in a close competitive match. One of our Boys’ Teams also made the play off for first and were victorious. This was our last day of Interschool Sport for 2023, and my last as Sports Coordinator, so it was an awesome way to finish off. Well done to all 33 players.

2023: ANOTHER BIG YEAR FOR EFS SPORT
As it has been throughout our proud history, Interschool Sport has again been integral in contributing to our positive school culture and the well-being of our students. This was reflected in the large number of students from Year 7 -12 who represented EFS in a wide range of sports. In 2023 we had almost 500 students represent EFS in 42 teams and 8 different Sports. Four new sports; Mountain Bikes, Table Tennis, Softball and Tag Rugby were offered this year.
Although we did not have the amazing ultimate success we had in State Carnivals last year, our Year 7/8 Girls Netball, Basketball and Volleyball Teams, as well as the Year 9/10 Girls Volleyball and Netball Teams, again made it through their Round Robins to the State Championships, with several of them reaching Grand Finals.
However, 2023 was our most successful in our Zone Carnivals, in the 25 years I have been here. This year we had 12 teams come out on top in our Fleurieu Zone One Day Carnivals in Indoor and Beach Volleyball, Football and Netball. Our Year 9/10 Girls also won an Interzone Beach Volleyball Day Carnival at Glenelg in Week 7.

Again, it was fantastic to see several individual students being selected in State and State Country teams, in a range of Sports this year. These results reflect the exceptional talent in our community, the great support parents provide, and the great job our community clubs and coaches do.
Sadly, for me, this year will be my last as Sports Coordinator, and it has been a great ride. I would personally like to thank the current school leadership and staff for their substantial support of School Sport at EFS. Finally, I must give a huge shout out and thank you to all the students for their enthusiasm and positive involvement. Although not coordinating, I will continue to support our extensive School Sport Program in 2024, and hopefully beyond.

Jerry Blair

This semester has seen some amazing examples of student creativity across both Stage 1 Multimedia and Photography. In lieu of the CREATE showcase, I wanted to share some examples of the beautiful work our students have produced. Across both subjects, students had the freedom to explore a broad range of themes and products, showcasing their unique interests and skillsets. From landscape and portraiture, through to graphic/web design and laser cut products, their works represent great creativity and skill. I appreciate both the students’ hard work and the support of parents in helping these artistic endeavours come to fruition.

Silos & Symphonies

Silos & Symphonies is a learning program provided by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra which brings professional composers together with students from regional schools to compose music through creative workshops.
Earlier this year, a group of EFS students participated in a workshop with composer Julian Ferraretto to create melodies and ideas that became the basis of a brand-new orchestral work. The students took inspiration from resident magpie Swoopy, developing motifs that capture his various moods - especially during Term 3! On Tuesday, 27th November, the students visited Grainger Studio, home of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, to witness the premiere of The Feathered Devil, composed by Julian Ferraretto and students of Eastern Fleurieu School. Theirs was one of seven pieces performed by the 50-piece ensemble, including three other premieres as part of the Silos & Symphonies program.
Congratulations to the 15 EFS students involved and thank you to the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and its sponsors for creating this opportunity!
Click on the video above to view The Feathered Devil, composed by Julian Ferraretto and students of Eastern Fleurieu School. IMPORTANT NOTE: This video is provided by the ASO for private viewing. It must not be copied or distributed beyond the EFS community.

RUBY TO REPRESENT AUSTRALIA IN INDOOR NETBALL IN 2024
After making the South Australian Indoor Netball team, our Year 9 student, Ruby participated in the National Indoor Netball Carnival in Brisbane in late November. After an exceptional carnival Ruby became the only member of the S.A. team selected in the Australian team to play in New Zealand next year. What an amazing achievement for this very talented all-round athlete, who has been a standout member of our Athletics, Netball, Volleyball, AFL Football and Cricket teams throughout the year. Congratulations Ruby from all the E.F.S. community and good luck for next year’s carnival.

EFS WIN THE SOUTHERN VALES AND FLEURIEU ZONE SPORTS PRINCIPAL’S CUP
At the last Sports Zone meeting of the year, I was very excited and proud to be presented with the Principal’s Cup. This cup has been awarded to the school that has been the most successful school in our Zone Day Carnivals. There were 25 government and private schools this year that participated in our zone in Volleyball, 9 a Side Football, Outdoor 5 a Side Soccer, Netball and Basketball, in all year levels. Schools received 10 points for 1st, 7 for 2nd, and 5 for 3rd.
Over the year we recorded 111 points across all the sports, 20 points ahead of second placed Reynella East College. This was the first time we have won this award and it’s a very nice recognition of the talent and commitment to School Sport demonstrated by our students, and the numerous teachers who coached our sides throughout the year. It also highlighted the great support our leadership provides to allow our teachers and students to attend so many of these Day Carnivals. Let’s hope we can win it back again in 2024.

CONNECT PROGRAM
SKATE DECK ART

Throughout Connect, one of the passion projects completed this semester was the Skate Deck Art. We designed and painted a skateboard for ourselves which could be for decorative or functional use. We needed to complete research for ideas, artist research, mood boards and design sketches before starting on our skateboard.
Each student had their own skateboard and could be as creative as they wanted, putting their own ideas and styles into the board. Some students experimented with hydro dipping their board, others used the laser cutter in tech and used posca pens to add detail to the designs. It was a fun experience to be coming up with unique ideas and working with different styles and it was great to be able to take it home once finished.

YEAR 9 FOOD AND TEXTILES
GLOBAL FOODS BANQUET

Students chose a country to research, prepare and present a signature dish from, highlighting key ingredients and flavours. Some of the countries chosen were Belgium, Mexico, Thailand, Portugal and Greece. They were so excited for this event and to be able to serve their dishes as part of a Global Foods Banquet for teachers to try and provide feedback. The results from all students were outstanding and absolutely delicious! They should be very proud of their efforts!

YEAR 10 FOOD AND HOSTPIALITY
FOOD TRUCKS
The Year 10 Food and Hospitality classes showcased their skills in the kitchen to the EFS community during their Food Truck assessment task. Students were to select, market, prepare and sell a takeaway option with an environmental focus to the school community. The meal had to be a delicious, yet affordable option that students would want to buy. As they worked within a group, students demonstrated their ability to participate effectively in a team, researching hospitality trends, gain experience in serving customers and worked with money. Well done to all students involved. It was an incredible experience for all and the positive feedback from those who bought from the food trucks was well received.

NAIDOC WEEK T SHIRTS
As part of the Connect Program, Katelyn, one of our wonderful First Nations students designed a NAIDOC Week T Shirt with her Indigenous Art on them. The t-shirts were made in either black or white with the art across the front. Staff at EFS were able to purchase one of these T-Shirts and any profits made were able to go towards Katelyn’s education.
